September 1995 Dear OmniPage Limited Edition Customer, Here is a list of tips and up to date information: Installation Notes: - PLEASE RESTART WINDOWS AFTER THE INSTALLATION HAS BEEN COMPLETED! - Do not install OmniPage Limited Edition while an anti-virus program such as VSAFE is running. Prior to installation, stop the anti-virus program. Once the installation is complete you should be able to run your anti-virus program and OmniPage Limited Edition at the same time without any problems. This is a common problem with many installation programs. Installation Troubleshooting: - Basic Installation Checklist Use this checklist to find and remedy the most common installation problems. Make sure your PC starts up normally (without any error messages) and can run other software. Make sure Windows version 3.1 is installed and working correctly in enhanced mode. Try running other Windows software such as Paintbrush, Notepad, or Calculator to see if they run properly. Be sure to reboot your computer after installing Windows so that the Windows subdirectory is added to your path. If the OmniPage Limited Edition installation program cannot find your Windows subdirectory in the path, the installation program may terminate. Make sure your system has at least 8 MBytes of memory for DOS, Windows, and OmniPage Limited Edition - more if you want to load other programs at the same time or use OCR Aware. From the Windows Program Manager, choose About Program Manager from the Help menu to determine the mode in which Windows is operating and the amount of available memory Windows should be running in Enhanced mode and report at least 9 MBytes of total free virtual memory. Consult the installation and configuration information included with Windows to determine how to correct any problems. Make sure your scanner is plugged in, turned on, and that the scanner is working according to the manufacturer's specifications. If you have not done that, it is important to do so now, before continuing with troubleshooting. If you have another software package that uses this scanner (such as the graphics software supplied with the scanner), use it to see whether the problem is specific to OmniPage Limited Edition or common to other programs. If you are using a disk cache program (other than the SMARTDRV.EXE program included with Windows), temporarily disable it and try to install again. Some cache programs interfere with proper memory allocation. Once you complete the installation, enable the cache program and make sure it works. You should never run Windows without a disk cache program - performance will not be acceptable. In most cases, you will want to use SMARTDRV.EXE. - IF YOU HAVE DEFECTIVE MEDIA (your computer cannot read the floppy disks) Please call (408) 395-8319 for replacement disks. Outside the US, call the appropriate number listed at the end of this file. OCR Aware Tips: - If your system has 8 megabytes of memory it is required that you have at least 9 megabytes of Windows Virtual Memory (this can be examined from the "386 Enhanced" item in the Windows Control Panel). - The OCR Aware macro relies on the Edit menu of the host application to post a Paste command from the Windows ClipBoard. If the host application is in an "idle" state where there is no document open and the Edit menu is not active, the OCR Aware macro will not be able to complete its operation by Pasting its text into a document. If this happens, you will need to open a document then manually paste the contents of the ClipBoard into a newly opened document. - OCR Aware allows you to add OCR capabilities to most text-based Windows applications. There are some applications which do not allow the ClipBoard functions which we require to share information between the host application and OmniPage Limited Edition and therefore they are not supported by OCR Aware. General Notes: - OmniPage Limited Edition's ability to Cut and Paste information into and out of other applications is limited by the Windows ClipBoard. The largest document size allowable within the ClipBoard is 64K. - When using a RAMDrive as a temporary drive for OmniPage Limited Edition's TEMP directory, (i.e. temp=g:\, where g: is a RAMDrive) it is recommended that the default number of entries for the RAM Drive be set to 256 or more. This is done by properly setting the ramdrive.sys driver in your CONFIG.SYS file. For example: device=c:\dos\ramdrive.sys 1024 512 256 /E OmniPage Limited Edition uses this directory for the storage of special settings. There can be great risk to storing these files on a RAMDrive and virtually no processing speed benefit since it is not used as a "scratch" file. - Running both OmniPage Limited Edition and Calera's WordScan OCR application at the same time can cause errors within OmniPage Limited Edition. These applications share certain driver files which will not allow them to operate concurrently. - Documents saved from OmniPage Limited Edition as WordPerfect 5.2 word processing files may exhibit a problem where the font is changed to what looks like a Greek Symbol character set. We are unable to influence this behavior, therefore either the entire document will need to be selected and have its font universally changed or select a WordPerfect Printer driver from within WP5.2 instead of a Windows printer driver. - OmniPage Limited Edition can produce an "Out of Memory" error in low memory situations. If OmniPage Limited Edition presents a "Retry" option, it is quite possible that it will solve the immediate problem by compacting memory and allowing you to continue. - Four megabytes (4 MB) of RAM is not enough memory to run the AutoZone feature of Hewlett-Packard's AccuPage and OmniPage Limited Edition's OCR engine. The error message, "Error! - HP: AccuPage engine out of memory" will result unless more RAM is added. - When "Out of Memory" errors persist within OmniPage Limited Edition, expanding the Virtual Memory settings within Windows may alleviate this problem. Setup a Permanent swap file of 8-12 MB. In order to use OmniPage Limited Edition concurrently with other Windows applications it may be necessary to add more RAM to your PC. - If you are using a Windows shell (such as Norton Desktop) you may require more memory than the minimum OmniPage Limited Edition memory requirements. If you do get out of memory errors using a Windows shell it is recommended that you deactivate the shell before running OmniPage Limited Edition or increase your system memory. Follow the Windows shell documentation for deactivating the shell. - If you are using Windows in one of the Nordic languages (such as Swedish or Finnish) and using one of the Nordic recognition languages for OCR, you may require more memory than the listed OmniPage Limited Edition minimums. For these languages it is recommended that you use increase either your system memory or your Windows Virtual memory. Thank you for selecting Caere's OmniPage Limited Edition! - FOR REPLACEMENT MEDIA OUTSIDE THE US: Country Telephone Number Australia 1-800-800548 Austria 0660-5878 Belgium 800-111-11 Denmark 800-17328 Finland 0800-111844 France 05-916010 Germany 0130-810915 Italy 1678-77416 Netherlands 06-022-2083 New Zealand 0-800-445395 Norway 800-11667 Portugal 05055-3242 Spain 900-95-3539 Sweden 020-791091 Switzerland 155-8226 United Kingdom 0800-614-759 Other European Countries +353-1-7063908 (TEL) +353-1-2957530 (FAX) All Other Countries Contact your local distributor.
