Installation Instructions

This section describes installing and using the Adaptec Ultra160 Family Manager Set (FMS) Driver for Windows NT.  If you are performing a first time Windows NT installation, see the "Completing a Fresh Windows NT v4.0 Installation from Floppy Disk" or the "Completing a Fresh Windows NT v4.0 Installation from CD-ROM " sections below.  If Windows NT is already installed on your system, see the "Updating the Adaptec driver under Windows NT v4.0" section below.  For more complete instructions, the Ultra160 FMS User's Guide is available online.  Please see the support section at http://www.adaptec.com/support/ .

Completing a Fresh Windows NT v4.0 Installation from Floppy Disk

The following instructions explain how to install the Adaptec Ultra160 Family Manager Set, while installing Windows NT v4.0.

1. Start your system with the Windows NT Boot Diskette in the floppy drive.

2. Insert diskette #2 when prompted.  After a few moments you will see a blue screen.   To setup Windows NT now, press ENTER.

3. Press S to skip Windows NT Setup's auto detection of your SCSI adapter.

4. Press S again to specify an additional device.

5. Press ENTER to select Others, and insert the Adaptec Ultra160 Family Manager Set diskette.

6. Use the arrow keys to highlight and select the desired driver, then press Enter.

7. If you want to add other host adapters (that are not a part of the Ultra160 Family), do so at this time by pressing 'S' and repeating step 5 for each additional adapter and inserting the appropriate disk provided by the hardware manufacturer.  The Adaptec Ultra160 Family host adapters use the same driver; it is not necessary to install the ADPU160M.SYS driver again.

8. Press ENTER to continue with the Windows NT operating system setup.  Follow the instructions given on screen and in the Windows NT installation documentation.

Completing a Fresh Windows NT v4.0 Installation from CD-ROM

1. Ensure your Windows NT v4.0 CD is inserted into the CD-ROM drive.

2. Start your system.  Immediate press and release the F6 key when you see the following message:

3. When prompted, press S to specify an additional device.

4. Press Enter to select Others; insert the Adaptec Ultra160 Family Manager Set for Windows NT diskette in your floppy drive.

5. Use the arrow keys to highlight and select the desired driver, then press Enter.

6. To add other host adapters that are not part of the Ultra160 Family, press S and repeat from Step 4 for each additional adapter and insert the appropriate driver disk.

7. Press Enter to continue with the Windows NT operating system setup. Follow the instructions onscreen and in the Windows NT documentation to complete the installation.

Updating the Adaptec Driver under Windows NT v4.0

Follow these instructions only if Windows NT v4.0 is already installed.

1. Click the Start button on the Windows NT task bar, and the point to Settings.

2. Open the Control Panel, double-click on SCSI Adapters.

3. Select the Drivers tab, and click the Add button.

4. In the "Install Driver" window, click the Have Disk button.

5. Insert the Adaptec Ultra160 Family Manager Set for Windows NT diskette.

6. At the "Copy manufacturer's files from" text box, type a:\nt4, and click OK.

7. At the Install Driver window, select the driver, then click OK.

8. In response to "Do you want to use the currently installed driver(s) or install new one(s)", select the New button.

9. Type a:\nt4 and click continue.  The driver is now installed.

10. You must restart your computer for the changes to take effect.  Click Yes to restart your computer.  Click No to return to the SCSI Adapters window.

Removing a Host Adapter from Windows NT v4.0

Removing a host adapter can be as simple as physically removing it from the slot when your computer is shut down. Windows NT boots and functions properly in this configuration, but a warning message is generated every time you boot Windows NT.

NOTE:  If you have removed a host adapter but still have other host adapters of the same type installed in your computer, do not use Windows NT Setup to remove the device driver.

To eliminate the warning message, you must update the Windows NT software configuration, as described in the following steps:

1. Open the Control Panel, double-click on SCSI Adapters.

2. Select the Drivers tab.

3. Select the Driver you wish to remove. For Ultra160, select

5. If you are sure you are removing the correct host adapter type, click Yes.

6. You must restart your computer for the changes to take effect. Click Yes to restart your computer.  Click No to return to the SCSI Adapters window.

Swapping a Host Adapter in Windows NT 4.0

Swapping one type of host adapter for another is similar to the procedure for adding a host adapter. The important distinction is that you make all software configuration changes while Windows NT is running and before you make the hardware changes.

NOTE: If you do not install the driver that comes with the new host adapter, it may result in Windows NT failing to boot.

1. Install the driver for the new host adapter by following the steps in Updating Windows NT with the Driver, above.

• It is not essential to remove the device driver for the host adapter you are replacing. Windows NT dynamically detects the absence or presence of host adapter hardware, and no problems should arise if you leave the existing device driver installed. You may remove the device driver later, after you have successfully rebooted Windows NT. However, if you leave the driver in, the system alerts you with an error message of the extra device driver every time you boot. See Removing a Host Adapter above.

3. Restart your computer and Windows NT. It is possible that some drive letter assignments may change from the previous configuration.

Note about Windows v3.51 and earlier

There is no Ultra160 driver for Windows NT 3.51 or earlier at this time. Please check http://www.adaptec.com at a later time to see if a driver is available.

Additional Notes

• If disconnection is disabled under SCSISelect for a hard disk device, the system may hang if the hard disk device supports tagged queuing.  It is recommended to always enable disconnection for hard disk devices.  By default, disconnection is enabled so no action is required.  If for some unique requirements disconnection has to be absolutely disabled for hard disk devices, you can turn off tagged queue requests by editing the Windows NT Registry.  You can do so by following these instructions:

1. Select Run from the Start button.

2. Enter REGEDT32 to run the Registry Editor.

3. Open \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\adpu160m.

4. Create a key named Parameters by selecting Add Key from the Edit pull-down menu and entering "Parameters" (without quotations) in the edit-box for Key Name.  Leave the Class edit-box blank.

5. Open Parameters and create a key named Device by selecting Add Key from the Edit pull-down menu.  Enter "Device" (without quotations) in the Key Name edit-box. Leave the Class edit-box blank.

6. Open Device. Select the Add Value option from the Edit pull-down menu. In the Value Name edit-box, enter "DisableTaggedQueuing" (without quotations). Select the Data Type REG_SZ from the droplist combo box.

7. Shutdown and restart Windows NT.

8. Set Enable Disconnection to No for your particular device(s) in SCSISelect during bootup. (See your Host Adapter manual on how to use SCSISelect).

• If the logical driver letters assigned by the BIOS change when the NT operating system is running, it's not an error.  To preserve drive letter assignments between BIOS and NT, run the NT disk administrator and choose permanent drive letters assignments as an option.  NT will then preserve logical driver letter assignments across boots and adapters.

• The boot manager for Windows NT contains recovery logic to allow you to return to the last known good configuration. If you have changed your host adapter configuration and Windows NT no longer boots, follow these steps to recover:

1. Undo any hardware changes you have made to the computer since it was last operational.

2. Reboot the computer. Watch the display carefully during bootup. When it tells you to press the spacebar to invoke the last known good configuration, press the Spacebar.

3. Follow the instructions on the screen to continue booting with the last known good configuration.  For Windows NT 4.0 only, hit the letter "L", to switch to the last known good configuration.

4. Once your computer is operational again, check all of the hardware and software configuration changes you want to make. Look specifically for conflicts with parts of the existing system configuration that are not being changed.
 
• If repeated timeouts are observed (viewed as "Event ID 11" in the Event Viewer), the following recommendation can help correct this:

• Set the SCSI ID of the host adapter to the lowest priority ID on the SCSI bus (the order of priority starts from 7-0, then 15-8).  This gives other devices a better chance to gain access to the SCSI bus to complete their commands.  Please consult the User's Guide for procedures on how to change the ID of the SCSI host adapter.

• Certain older hard drives (Ultra-SCSI and lower) do not meet certain SCSI timing requirements, and can cause the operating system to fail to boot.  It is recommended that the firmware on the hard drive is updated or the drive is moved to the Fast/Wide segment (SE connector) on the host adapter where the commands of these drives can be buffered.

Follow the instructions below to enter the registry values that affect how the Windows NT SCSI manager interprets the generic configuration information of SCSI device drivers. All SCSI host adapters installed in your system are affected by the values you enter here. A list of valid values follows.

Note:  The following value keys are case-sensitive and must be entered exactly as shown.

• DisableTaggedQueuing--A nonzero value indicates that the SCSI host adapter disables tagged queueing for SCSI devices. The data type for this value is REG_SZ.
• DisableSynchronousTransfers--A nonzero value indicates that the SCSI host adapter is not to initiate synchronous negotiations (but it may still accept negotiations initiated by a SCSI target). The data type for this value is REG_SZ.
• DisableDisconnects--A nonzero value indicates that targets are not permitted to disconnect during the execution of a SCSI command. The data type for this value is REG_DWORD.
• MaximumLogicalUnit--This can limit the scan for connected devices on the SCSI bus. Valid values are 1 to 8. If 1 is specified, the Windows NT SCSI manager assumes that no SCSI targets support LUNs other than 0. Otherwise, LUNs from 0 to 8 are scanned during system initialization. The data type for this value is REG_DWORD.
• Maximum SGList-- Specifies the maximum number of scatter-gather elements. Valid values are 17-255. The data type for this value is REG_DWORD.

1. Select Run from the start button.
2. Type regedt32 and press Enter.
3. Open the registry list to the following location:

If the \Parameters\Device keys already exist, skip to step 8 below to begin entering values. If the keys do not yet exist, you will need to create them by continuing with step 4.

4. Click on the adpu160m key.
5. Select Add Key from the Edit menu; Type Parameters in the Key Name edit box. Leave the Class edit box blank.
6. Click on the Parameters key.
7. Select Add Key from the Edit menu; Type Device in the Key Name edit box. Leave the Class edit box blank.

To specify a certain host adapter, append Device with the number of the host adapter. For example, type Device0 for the first host adapter, Device1 for the second, etc. If you omit the host adapter number, the configuration information applies to all Ultra160 Family host adapters.

8. Click on the Device key.
9. Select Add Value from the Edit menu. In the Value Name edit box, enter one of the valid parameter values. Make sure to enter the appropriate Data Type for the value. To enter additional values, repeat steps 8-9.

Enabling PCI Hot-Plug

PCI Hot-Plug is supported by the ADPU160M.SYS NT 4.0 driver. You will need a system and application software that supports PCI Hot-Plug in order for this feature to work. Do not enable the PCI Hot-Plug feature unless your system is PCI Hot-Plug capable.

Follow the instructions below to enable PCI Hot-Plug support in the driver.

1. Run from the Start button.
2. Type HOTP160M.REG (or a:\nt4\HOTP160M.REG and insert your Adaptec Ultra160 Family Manager Set driver diskette) and press Enter.
3. Click on OK.
4. Reboot the system.

Using Registry Editor

To use the Registry Editor to enter ADPU160M.SYS driver-specific parameters that affect the configuration information for Adaptec SCSI PCI device drivers, follow the instructions below. A list of valid parameters follows.

Note:  The following parameters are case-sensitive and must be entered exactly as shown. When entering multiple parameters, each parameter must be separated by a space.

To enter driver-specific parameters, follow these steps:

1. Run from the start button.
2. Type regedt32 and press Enter.
3. Open the registry list to the following location:

If the \Parameters\Device\DriverParameters keys already exist, skip to step 10 below to begin entering parameters. If the keys do not yet exist, you will need to create them by continuing with step 4.

4. Click on the adpu160m key.
5. Select the Add Key from the Edit menu; Type Parameters in the Key Name edit box. Leave the Class edit box blank.
6. Click on the Parameters key.
7. Select the Add Key from the Edit menu; Type Device in the Key Name edit box. Leave the Class edit box blank.

To specify a certain host adapter, append Device with the number of the host adapter. For example, type Device0 for the first host adapter, Device1 for the second, etc. If you omit the host adapter number, the configuration information applies to all Ultra160 Family host adapters.

8. Click on the Device key.
9. Select Add Value from the Edit menu; type DriverParameters in the Key Name edit box. Enter REG_SZ as the Data Type and press Enter.
10. A String Editor text box appears. Enter valid parameters in the text box. When entering multiple parameters, each parameter must be separated by a space.
