NEWS RELEASE MEDIATRIX AND SRS LABS INTRODUCE FIRST DSP SRS (ù)r 3-D STEREO SOUND CARD FOR PCS Mediatrix Peripherals is the first manufacturer to offer SRS in DSP format Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada (June 9, 1995)- Mediatrix Peripherals, Inc. announced today that it has entered into a licensing agreement with SRS Labs Inc., the leader in 3-D audio technology. Mediatrix will incorporate the patented SRS (ù)r 3-D sound technology into its DSP/Effects Processor. This daughterboard is an optional addition to the award winning Audiotrix Pro multimedia sound board. The Audiotrix Pro sound board has been praised throughout the industry for its unmatched expansion capabilities, which include the DSP/Effects Processor, RAM/512 KB, and Multi-CD daughterboards. The DSP/Effects Processor allows the Audiotrix Pro to add digital effects to music. These effects include reverb, flange, chorus, delay, pitch shifting, a 3-band graphic equalizer and now, SRS (ù)r 3-D sound. "Mediatrix is the first company to use the SRS (ù)r 3-D sound technology in the form of an algorithm inside a DSP", said Stephen Sedmak, President of SRS Labs, Inc. "The advantage of this implementation is that it gives the user full control over the `Space', `Center' and `Volume' levels of the SRS (ù)r 3-D sound. This enables the listener to customize the SRS (ù)r and to maximize the effect of the 3-D sound". Current DSP/Effects Processor owners do not have to add a hardware component to their PC to obtain SRS (ù)r 3-D sound; they can simply upgrade to this capability through software. Anyone owning a DSP/Effects Processor should contact Mediatrix for the upgrade procedure. "The Audiotrix Pro, with DSP/Effects and SRS (ù)r 3-D sound, gives the PC environment sound quality and sound modeling which has never been available before", said John Moran, President of Mediatrix Peripherals Inc. "The Audiotrix Pro now offers the user a truly interactive role in the reproduction of sound, which is ideal for anything from making music to multimedia presentations with maybe a game or two of network `Doom' in between". Established in 1992, Mediatrix Peripherals Inc. is a designer, developer, manufacturer, and marketer of audio products for personal computers. With head offices and manufacturing facilities located in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, Mediatrix services customers on a world-wide basis. SRS Background SRS Labs is the leading provider of 3-D audio technologies. Led by chairman Thomas Yuen, co-founder of AST Research, the company licenses its patented SRS 3-D sound technology to leading OEM's in the consumer electronics, computer multimedia, electronic gaming, professional sound and automotive industries. SRS was licensed by Sony and Thomson to produce the first 3-D audio analog chips. SRS and its licensees introduced the first computer upgrade card with 3-D stereo, the first 3-D home theater product, the first 3-D cinema processor and the first 3-D stereo sound card for computers. Originally developed at the Hughes Aircraft Company by senior audio scientist Arnold Klayman, SRS (ù)r, the Sound Retrieval Systemr, produces a fully immersive, three-dimensional sound image from any audio source with two or more standard stereo speakers. Whether the signal is mono, stereo, surround sound or encoded with any audio enhancement technology, SRS (ù)r expands the material and creates a realistic panoramic sound experience with no "sweet spot" or centered listening position. SRS (ù)r is single-ended, requiring no encoding or decoding and uses no artificial manipulation of the signal through time delay or phase shift to produce its natural, musical and true-to-life sound image. Since its introduction to the market, the SRS (ù)r technology has continually received industry acclaim and major awards, including "The Best of CES" Distinction by the Consumer Electronics Show, Finalist for the 1995 Discover Magazine Awards for Technological Innovation, and "Best of What's New" Distinction by Popular Science. The unique SRS (ù)r 3-D sound process has been awarded four U.S. patents comprising 260 claims with patents issued in 17 countries. SRS Labs holds four additional US patents in related sound technologies. SRS licensees are the industry leaders and represent the best in each market segment such as RCA, the leading seller of color televisions and Packard Bell the leader in personal computers. SRS licensees include Sony, Nakamichi, Reveal Computer Products, Media Vision, Aztech, Paramount Home Theater Products, NMB Technologies, Genoa, Advanced Digital Systems, NuReality, and SMART Theater Systems. Software developers such as Interplay, Spectrum Holobyte and Microprose use SRS (ù)r to enhance the recorded audio content of multimedia titles providing game enthusiasts with a more realistic experience.
